Men who become impotent have a higher risk of developing cardiovascular problems than those who have normal sexual function, according to a study. Impotence or erectile dysfunction is linked to a 27 percent higher risk of heart- related events such as angina, heart attack or stroke. The link was similar to those found with high cholesterol, cigarette smoking or a family history of heart attacks.
The study is the first to show a strong association between erectile dysfunction and heart disease according to researchers. The findings emphasizes on the fact that doctors should evaluate the cardiovascular health of men who seek impotence drugs such as Pfizer Inc.’s Viagra. Erectile function is a vascular process therefore it’s not surprising that you might see a problem with blood-vessel health earlier with sexual function than with the heart.
